The films on this list share a quality that is difficult to define precisely: a structural or conceptual ambiguity that is not a flaw but a feature. They are not confusing because their makers were sloppy. They are challenging because their subjects — consciousness, identity, time, reality — resist tidy resolution, and the best films about these subjects honour that resistance.
A note: we have excluded films that are merely confusing. A film can be unclear and dull. The films here are challenging and alive. There is a difference.
